We want to make you fall in love with science!

We’re creating a flourishing community of people from all walks of life who are interested in science or learning in general. As a fully volunteer-run organization, we coordinate with those in STEM including students, researchers, industry professionals and professors and bring this knowledge to you in a fun and social format. We host monthly free events in Orange County, CA—check out our events calendar! You can also head to our Instagram where we will be posting lots of great science content!

Dr. Ted Yoo

FOUNDER

I’m a scientist that designs computer programs to help solve complex problems. My graduate thesis was all about computer simulations of how specific molecules behave. These days though, the only molecule I care about is glucose—I’m a physicist at a startup creating algorithms for a next generation glucose sensor.

When I'm not doing science, I’m training to be a Muay Thai fighter. I also like going on hikes, mostly because of all the fun rocks to find along the way. And I can talk (i.e. rant) endlessly about energy policy!

I wanted to start Brain Public for the same reason I love science — I love asking questions. Bonus points for getting to answer them too.

My favorite scientific fields are computational physics (no surprise) and chaos theory. That's because they make the coolest pictures.

Did you know that I have a podcast about grad students? I’ve also written for the NPR radio show “The Loh Down on Science!”

Naomi Coe

FOUNDER

I work in the design industry, but have always been passionate about science. To me, learning inspires a sense of wonder and curiosity, and it’s my mission to share that exciting feeling with more people at Brain Public.

Science has always had a special place in my life. I got the first spark in 4th grade science class due to a particularly enthusiastic teacher and even made it to the Southern California Science Fair finals in 6th grade (I didn’t win). My career path ultimately took me down a more artistic route, but I’ve never lost the wide-eyed wonder that comes with learning something new about our fascinating world. I’ve always been drawn to the biological sciences, geology and microbiology in particular, and love few things more than a good long drive with a great science podcast.

It’s my goal now to bring my design and project management skills into the science communication sphere—from planning and managing our events to designing our website and fostering a friendly community eager to learn.
